Long before publishing a book could happen with a few clicks online, getting a story into the hands of

 a publisher meant something very different.

It meant typing letters. Printing manuscripts. Finding publishers. Addressing envelopes. Paying postage.

Mailing everything away — and then waiting.

Sometimes for weeks. Sometimes for months. Every reply became part of the journey.

Teri kept the letters she sent to publishers and the responses that came back, carefully saving the story of a dream she never gave up on.

This letter, dated May 19, 1994, is one of those pieces.

Teri was only 22 years old when she wrote to a publisher about her children's story. At the time, she was working as a Rehabilitative Aid in a Saskatchewan elementary school and wrote about how much she loved children and

 how she had been making up stories for them for years.

She explained that the story had originally been called Training Wheels — until she took it to school and read it to a Grade 1–2 class.

When the story was finished, she asked the children what they thought the title should be.

As Teri wrote in her letter, the shyest little girl in the class raised her hand and quietly said:

“Plop Goes Megan.”

And just like that, Teri knew.

That was the title.

What touches me most about this letter is how clearly you can see her hope in it.

She wrote that she had first written the story about two years earlier, set it aside, and then returned to it. When she read it again to the children at school, they were still talking about Megan and her training wheels afterward.

She knew she had something.

She was looking for an illustrator. She was asking for advice and direction. She was reaching out to publishers and doing what authors had to do in those days to try to get their work noticed.

And at the bottom of the letter she signed it simply:

There really is no question when I look through the letters she carefully kept.

She wanted to be an author.

Publishing Plop Goes Megan was her dream.

Nearly three decades later, those old letters became part of the reason I knew I had to finish what she had started.

She did the hard part first.

She wrote the story.

She believed in it.

She sent it out into the world.

As Teri’s twin sister, I had the privilege of helping her dream finally become real. 💜

For anyone who has shown an interest in Plop Goes Megan and in learning more about Teri, there is one part of this

journey that is especially important to me.

Publishing her book was never simply about seeing Teri’s name on the cover.

It was about finding a way to make sure a piece of her would remain.

Teri dreamed of becoming a published author. She wrote Plop Goes Megan, shared it with children, sent it to publishers and carefully saved the letters she sent and the responses that came back. Looking through those letters years later left me with absolutely no doubt

 — this was her dream.

When I was finally able to publish Plop Goes Megan in 2023, I felt as though I was finishing something Teri had started so many years before.

But I had one more goal.

I wanted Teri’s book to become part of Library and Archives Canada.

On October 28, 2023, I received the Official Legal Deposit Receipt confirming that two copies of Plop Goes Megan, written by Teri D. McDonald, had been received and processed into Canada’s national collection.

That moment meant more to me than I can really put into words.

Library and Archives Canada explains that when two copies of a printed publication are deposited, one becomes part of its service collection for public use, while the other is placed in its preservation collection and kept in a carefully controlled environment.

That was exactly what I had hoped for.

One copy of Teri’s book can continue to be discovered and read.

And another is being preserved — protected as part of Canada’s published heritage for generations to come.

There is something incredibly comforting about that.

Someday, long after those of us who personally knew and loved Teri are no longer here, her name will still be there.

Someone who never knew her may discover Plop Goes Megan, open its pages and read the story she wrote so many years ago.

For me, that is what keeping someone’s memory alive can look like.

We carry the people we love in our hearts and memories, of course. But I wanted something more for Teri. I wanted something tangible that would remain after us — something that would quietly say:

She was here.
She dreamed this.
She wrote this.
And her story mattered.

Publishing Plop Goes Megan fulfilled Teri’s dream.

Having her book preserved by Library and Archives Canada fulfilled one of mine.

It gave Teri’s story a place to live on. 💜
